Video How To Install Vinyl on Steel Tab Clips

There are several types of vinyl strap installations. We have put together this informative video showing the processes involved for installing vinyl strapping on a outdoor chair with steel tab clips. Some of the older models of outdoor patio furniture from the 60's and 70's used a vinyl strap with a steel clip to hold the vinyl in place. The steel clip has a square opening that slipped over the metal frame of the patio chair. The steel clip also had a tab or finger the was bent forward. The hole at the end of the vinyl strap was hooked over this tab when installed on the patio chair frame. This video has been made to give you an overview of the installation process on a typical vinyl strap, steel tab chair or chaise. How To Install Vinyl Strap With Steel Clips:

Vinyl Strapping on Steel Tab Clip Installation  Steps

  1. This video is intended to present the viewer with a vinyl strap installation using a steel tab clip. Please keep in mind that installations will vary by chair type and this video should be used as a general guideline for installation.
  2. Using a cloth measuring tape, measure across the chair frame starting from the inside of frame across to the opposite side. This will be the measurement used to determine the cut size of the vinyl replacement straps.
  3. Vinyl replacement straps will be cut smaller than the hole to hole measurement. For specific information on how to calculate the cut size of your vinyl strap, please visit the "How To" section.
  4. Use a measuring tape and scissors to cut the vinyl straps off of the roll at the desired cut size. Be sure to cut the vinyl straps as straight as possible.
  5. Once the vinyl straps have been cut, drill holes at the ends of both sides of the vinyl strap, ½" away from the end.
  6. Now, trim the corners using scissors.
  7. Insert several straps into boiling water and leave them in for a few minutes. This process allows the vinyl to stretch when pulled.
  8. Using a pair of tongs remove a strap from the boiling water and immediately dry it off with a towel.
  9. Attach steel clips to both sides of the chair frame making sure that the steel tabs are facing inward.
  10. Approach the clip from the underside of the chair rail and slip the hole in the vinyl replacement strap over the steel tab.
  11. Stretch the vinyl strap across to the opposite side chair frame and detain the strap with one hand. Use your free hand to slide the vinyl strap under the chair rail and attach the vinyl strap to the steel tab.
  12. An alternate method to the installation is to insert the steel tab clip into the hole in the vinyl strap and the pinch the strap and steel tab clip together when attaching to the chair frame. We have found that this is the easiest method but does require a little practice.
  13. Finally, turn the chair frame upside down and hammer down all of the steel tabs using a hammer and drift. This prevents the steel tab clips from coming loose from the chair frame while in use.
